New Automotive Journalism Course at Coventry

Inspired by Autocar editor Steve Cropley, Coventry University has recently launched the UK's first Automotive Journalism course.

For those individuals left uninspired by traditional journalism studies, Coventry University now offers a postgraduate course in Automotive Journalism. Inspiration for the course came from conversations between Steve Cropley, Editor-in-Chief of Autocar, and David Browne, Head of Transport Design at Coventry University. The problem, it seemed, was that although there's no lack of enthusiastic applicants for positions in the automotive press, there is a deficit in the knowledge and skills they possess relating to cars, bikes, trucks, transport and the car industry.

The solution came in the form of a partnership between Coventry's Communication, Media and Culture and Transport Design departments. In addition to key skills, the course covers a range of issues including legal working frameworks for journalists, research skills, theory and ethics. The automotive aspect of the course involves looking at industry specific issues such as globalisation, legislation, economics and manufacture as well as automotive design factors such as identity, brand and design language.

The university is considering applications now for entry in autumn 2004; with the option of one year full-time or two year part-time studies, it shouldn't be long before a better class of automotive journalist hits the streets in the UK.
